Career Coaching: What is it, why do it and how it can help you?
One of our most popular services at Clarico is 1:1 career coaching. Here we explain in more detail what it is, how it works, why you should do it and how it can help you.
What is Career Coaching?
There are various points in our career where it’s hard to see the bigger picture. The day to day can be so all consuming it can be next to impossible to zoom out and see where we are and where we are going. Indeed we may not have the time, space or capacity to even figure out where we want to go.
Career coaching is designed for those who have had this realisation and who want to regain contril and clarity when it comes to their careers. Whether you’re considering a career transition, aiming for a promotion or navigating the challenges of managing others, career coaching offers structured, personalised support to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
Why Should You Engage a Career Coach?
Unlike advice from well-meaning friends or generic career resources, career coaching is tailored specifically to you: your experience, values, strengths, challenges, and ambitions. A career coach doesn’t simply tell you what to do, they help you to think strategically, tap into your existing strengths and move forward with intention and clarity.
Career coaching can support you with:
Career transitions or role changes
Preparing for promotion or leadership roles
Navigating workplace challenges or uncertainty
Building confidence and professional presence
Managing others more effectively
Making decisions aligned with your values and long-term goals
Career coaching is a collaborative process that enables you drive your own career forward with confidence and clarity.
Why Engage a Career Coach?
Working with a dedicated career coach is a way of carving out time to prioritise yourself and your future. It is a way to make tangible progress towards your next step. It can greatly help with any “niggles” or “scrambled” thoughts you may have about your career, where you are at and where you are going.
Some of the most common reasons people choose career coaching are:
You Feel Stuck or Unclear
You may have achieved everything you have set out to achieve, followed the path you were meant to follow, yet you feel disengaged, unsure or restless. Career coaching helps you understand why you feel this way and what needs to change.
You’re Considering a Career Transition
Changing roles, industries or career direction can feel overwhelming. A career coach helps you explore options, assess risks, and create a realistic transition plan without starting from scratch.
You Want to Progress But Don’t Know How
You’re ready for more responsibility or leadership, but you’re not sure how to position yourself or be seen at the next level. Coaching helps you move from “working hard” to working strategically.
You’re Navigating a New Level of Responsibility
Managing people, influencing stakeholders, or stepping into a leadership role brings new challenges. Career coaching provides a space to reflect, build skills, and lead with confidence.
You Don’t Want to Figure It Out Alone
Career decisions have real consequences. Coaching gives you a confidential, supportive space to think things through with someone who understands workplace dynamics and professional growth.
How A Career Coach Can Help You?
Career coaching supports both practical outcomes and internal confidence because lasting change usually requires both.
Clarity and Direction
You gain a clearer understanding of what you want, what you value and what success looks like for you.
Confidence in Decision-Making
Instead of second-guessing yourself, you learn how to make informed, confident decisions.
Strategic Career Planning
You move from vague goals to a clear plan with realistic steps you can take alongside your current role or responsibilities.
Stronger Professional Presence
Career coaching helps you to articulate your value, advocate for yourself and show up with confidence in conversations about promotion, progression, or change.
Support Through Change
Career growth often involves discomfort. Coaching provides encouragement, accountability and perspective as you navigate new challenges. It is a way to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and learning how to thrive in change.
Is Career Coaching Right for You?
Career coaching may be a good fit if you:
Feel ready for change, but unsure where to start
Want to progress professionally without burning out
Are stepping into, or preparing for, a leadership role
Want a sounding board that’s objective and supportive
Value thoughtful, strategic career development
You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting. In fact, many people begin coaching precisely because they don’t.
