How Do I Know If It's Time for a Career Change?
At Clarico we have seen a lot of clients recently who are considering a career change. Sometimes they can’t precisely say why, they just have this feeling! A feeling that something is slightly off and something needs to change. In our sessions together we interrogate this feeling a little more but in this piece we explore how you can do some of this interrogation piece yourself.
If you've seen our recent Instagram post on this, you'll recognise some of what's below. Here's the fuller picture of what those signs actually mean, and what to do once you've spotted them in yourself.
There's a niggle you can't quite name
This is usually where it starts. A low-level sense that something needs to change, without being able to say what. It's easy to dismiss because it's vague, but a niggle that won't go away is still information. You don't need to have the answer before you take it seriously. You just need to stop explaining it away.
You've lost your focus
Tasks that used to hold your attention now feel like wading through wet sand. This isn't necessarily burnout in the classic sense, and it isn't laziness either. When motivation drops specifically around your work, while the rest of your life still feels manageable, that's usually your career trying to tell you something rather than your energy levels in general.
You're underperforming by your own standards
You know what you're capable of, and you know you're not bringing it. This one stings because it's not about anyone else's judgement of you, it's about your own. When you can feel the gap between the person you know you are at your best and the person showing up to this particular job, it's worth asking whether the role still fits and fulfills you.
Your life audit keeps pointing back to your job
If you were honest with yourself about what's draining you right now, where would the answer land? For a lot of people, no matter which angle they look from, sleep, relationships, energy, weekends, it keeps circling back to the same place. When your career keeps showing up as the common thread in an honest audit of your life, that's not a coincidence you can keep working around.
You're overcontrolling everything else
This is a quieter sign, and an easy one to miss. When your career feels like the one part of life you can't control, it's common to start gripping everything else tighter instead: your schedule, your diet, your house, other people. It can also show up physically, in your sleep, your energy, your general health. If you've noticed yourself white-knuckling other areas of your life, it's worth asking what you're actually trying to manage.
The Sunday Scaries have turned into something more serious
A bit of Sunday reluctance is normal. What we're talking about here is different: a real sense of dread that sets in before the week has even started, and doesn't lift once Monday arrives. When that feeling becomes a regular, extreme part of your week rather than an occasional low, it's not something to just push through.
You keep daydreaming about a different path
Scrolling job ads you have no real plan to apply for. Imagining yourself doing something completely different. Wondering what your life would look like if you'd taken the other turn a few years back. Daydreaming like this isn't a distraction from your real life, it's usually a signal about what your real life is currently missing.
What to do with all of this
None of these signs on their own means you need to overhaul your career tomorrow. But when a few of them are true at once, and have been true for a while, that's usually a sign to honor the niggle and consider a career change. A career change can be daunting and can impact many parts of your life. Sometimes support is needed when you’re going through a transition like this.
The hard part is rarely spotting that something's off. It's working out what to actually do about it: whether that's a different role in the same field, a genuine change of direction, or something you haven't even considered yet. That's exactly where Career Coaching comes in. Whether you're struggling with the indecision, actively weighing up a change, already in the middle of one, or figuring out your direction at an early career stage, we help you turn the niggle into an actual plan.
